Most health services are very good at providing you with the information you need as soon as you’re diagnosed as pre-diabetic or as having diabetes. There are also several good resources available on the internet. The problem with this advice is that it’s often easier said than done.

The key to making successful lifestyle changes that stick is to choose your own goals. This may sound strange, but often when I speak with clients it becomes clear that they are trying to chase a vision that someone else has set for them.

It’s often not something that they truly want for themselves or that is attainable at that point in their lives! These goals may look so big and far removed from where they find themselves at that moment that they despair and give up trying altogether.

How I Can Help

As your Diabetes Coach I will first help you set your main health goal. Then we’ll set smaller goals or stepping stones for each aspect that impacts on your health. This may include things like sleep, food, exercise, stress etc. but you get to decide what we work on and what we aim for.

In each session we’ll focus on one aspect of your health or life and break it down even further. The aim is to make it easy for you to come up with an action plan that fits in around your life and that you’re actually excited about! Importantly, we’ll also look at the obstacles that have derailed you in the past and devise plans to overcome them.

I always encourage people to book a free call with me before they book any coaching sessions. The purpose of these calls are to make sure that you understand what you can expect from a coaching session and also to determine if you are ready to be coached. I cannot help anyone who has not yet made the descision to want to take action. It will also allow you to decide if I’m the right coach for you.

You will not be asked to commit to any sessions during or after the call. I will send you an information pack after the call that you can look through in your own time.

Your Diabetes coach can help you break your health goals into manageable steps.

I’ve not come across a single case where a person with diabetes did not want to improve their lifestyle. The problem seems to be that other factors e.g. erratic work hours, knee injuries, a fear of being socially isolated to name but a few, often stand in their way.

How A Diabetes Coach Can Help

Another benefit of having me as your Diabetes Coach is that I am 100% focussed on YOU, what you want to achieve and what obstacles you have to overcome in order to achieve it. It is my job as your coach to make sure that we look at all the things that have stopped you from sticking to your plans in the past and work out ways to circumnavigate them.

I will help you think outside the box and come up with new ideas that you may not have considered in the past. There is no use in trying the same old things if they have not worked before. We’ll also work out backup plans in case your week throws you a curve ball.

“Improvements in the coaching group alone were also observed for self-reported adherence, exercise frequency, stress, and perceived health status. Coaching participants with elevated baseline A1C (≥7%) significantly reduced their A1C.” – Wolever et al. (2010)

“Results from a pilot study on type 1 diabetes patients are presented. This preliminary evidence suggests that the program is feasible, acceptable to a large majority of patients, and effective in reducing HbA1c levels.”Sacco et al. (2004)

“In this study, 276 employees at a medical center self-selected to participate in either a 3-month health coaching intervention or control group. The treatment group showed significant improvement in both SF-12 physical (p = .035) and mental (p = .0001) health status compared to controls.”Butterworth et al. (2006)

“Compared with non-participants, programme participants improved their self-efficacy (P = 0.01), patient activation (P = 0.02), lifestyle change score (P = 0.01) and perceived health status (P = 0.03).”Linden et al. (2010)

“I found the coaching sessions with Maryke invaluable. I have spent a number of years procrastinating about my weight, but never finding the motivation to challenge myself. The coaching sessions have proven to be inspirational to fire me to challenge myself to do the life changes required to lose weight and get fitter. The questions directed by Maryke stay with me, and I often find myself using the same questions on myself to prevent me stopping or quitting.”

Meet Your Diabetes Coach

I’ve been helping people improve their health since I qualified as a physiotherapist in 2003. I’m passionate about helping others reach their full potential and enjoy life with their families and friends. Life is for living, but having healthy bodies makes it so much more fun!

People look at me and think “She looks healthy. Life must be easy.” But I also struggle with making healthy choices every day. I have a wonky gene that means my cholesterol is naturally high and lives at 9.8. My digestive system also retaliates whenever I indulge in some of my favourite things like red wine, chocolate, biscuits, pasta, bread and coffee. So I’m no stranger to the challenges that lifestyle changes bring.

There is no one size fits all approach to healthy living. Every person’s body has different requirements, we enjoy different things and our lives brings different challenges. My job as your coach is to help you find your own way to a healthier you!

“…Maryke Louw’s skills lie not only in intelligent use of her knowledge of physiotherapy but also in her unwavering cheerful disposition, thoughtfulness, dedication and determination to encourage and lift the spirits of her patients…” – J. Considine

I’m also registered with the International Coach Federation which strives to ensure that their members provide high quality coaching.

FAQ

Coaching is not about giving advice or telling people what they should be doing. This may sound strange, but think back to how many times in the past people have asked your advice just to turn around and do something totally different. This is because only the person who is in that situation truly knows all the different aspects or players that need to be considered for an ideal solution.

Your diabetes coach uses a carefully thought out questioning process to help you identify what is important for YOU to achieve in your health. It is not about what we think you SHOULD be achieving. Once you’ve established what health goals will make you happy, they then help you look at what has stopped you from achieving these goals in the past and how you can overcome these barriers to be successful.

The coaching philosophy works from the premise that the client possesses all the resources and creativity within themselves to elicit their own solution. The coach’s task is to gently challenge and encourage you in order to help you think of solutions that you may not have considered otherwise.

How many times have you set yourself goals in the past to eat more healthily or maybe exercise more or go to bed before 11pm etc.? How many times have you found yourself default back to bad habits despite really wanting to change?

This is where your Diabetes Coach can help. Your coach will help you stay focussed and will encourage and challenge you to hold yourself accountable. Their encouragement and motivation will help you bridge the gap between where you are now to where you want to be in the future.

The coaching relationship is 100% confidential and non-judgemental and empowers you to take confident focussed steps towards your ideal health.

You won’t truly know until you’ve tried it, but you can book a free call with Maryke to find out more about the process and how it can benefit you. Look at the following questions:

  • Do you want to improve your health?
  • Have you known that you want to make changes to your lifestyle for a while, but appear to be stuck in a rut?
  • Does the gap between where you are at the moment and where you want to be health-wise look enormous and overwhelming?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you will very likely benefit from having a Diabetes Coach.

This will depend on the size of your goal. I usually find that between 4 to 6 sessions, at 2 weekly intervals are enough for people to attain short term goals. Larger goals may require longer term support.

The important thing is that you are always in charge of the sessions and that you can decide how often you want to be coached.

Yes, coaching over the phone works just as well. I find that it often helps to focus one’s attention and allows for deep listening as it eliminates all visual distractions.

Coaching sessions are 100% confidential and nothing that is said during a session will ever be disclosed unless it is required by law.

  • Not about me making any judgements on our conversations.
  • Not about me giving you any advice or suggestions during the sessions. You are responsible for creating your own results.
  • We do not delve into the past or deal with psychological issues or serious addictions. Coaching is in no way to be construed as psychological counselling or any type of therapy.
